Veolia LFGTE Project Will Fuel Milwaukee Wastewater Facility

Milwaukee-based Veolia ES Solid Waste and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) will work together on a landfill gas-to-energy project that will fuel turbines at a MMSD facility.

MMSD will design, construct and operate 19 miles of low-pressure pipeline that will transport landfill gas from Veolia’s Emerald Park Landfill in Muskego, Wis., to downtown Milwaukee, where the gas will power three turbines at the Jones Island Water Reclamation Facility.

The project should be operational by 2013, according to Veolia.

“Converting landfill gas into electricity is a truly sustainable model for energy development that benefits every constituent served by MMSD from an environmental and economic standpoint,” said Jim Long, president and CEO of Veolia ES Solid Waste, in a press release. “This is one of a number of landfill gas-to-energy projects that our company has undertaken, turning waste into a resource for the communities we serve.
