APWA Celebrates 100 Years Of Public Service

This year's four-day American Public Works Association (APWA) International Con-gress and Exposition will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the public works profession with displays of products, services and equipment from more than 450 manufacturers, suppliers and consultants.

The event, which will be held at McCormick Place in Chicago from Sunday, September 25 through Wednesday, September 28, will offer diverse networking opportunities and educational and technical information sessions for public works professionals.

This year's show will kick off with a "Taste of Chicago" opening celebration at the newly renovated Navy Pier, with musicians, entertainers, food and even yacht cruises on Lake Michigan for a view of the city skyline at night.

Each day will offer two-and-a-half hours of dedicated exhibit time covering 300,000 square feet of space. In addition, plenty of extracurricular activities are planned in the Windy City, including a White Sox game and a riverboat cruise.

Highlights from the Institute for Solid Wastes (ISW) program will in-clude regulatory and legislative up-dates, the latest collection and bil-ling technology, discussion of the re- cent flow control ruling and a debate on regionalization.

ISW will also feature three of the solid waste management trends in the host city, which include Chi-cago's recycling procurement process, the problem of illegal dumping and the status of waste-to-energy fa-cilities.

On Wednesday, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., there will be a tour of Re-source Management Enterprise's material recovery facility in Plain-field, Ill., which handles 10,000 tons of recyclable commingled MSW per month.
