Monterey Park, Calif. -- Under a recent settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Justice Department, 177 companies have agreed to pay $340 million to clean up the Operating Industries Inc. landfill, located approximately 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
The landfill, which was in operation from 1948 to 1984, was declared a Superfund site in 1986. Since then, approximately $600 million has been paid toward site remediation.
