New York – According to a Survey USA poll taken on March 25, 2002, 56 percent of New York City residents would prefer to have the city’s garbage incinerated rather than reopen the Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island, N.Y., while 26 percent would prefer to reopen the landfill.
When asked about the city’s recycling program, which Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed to cut for 18 months to save money, 76 percent said that the program has been effective, while 22 percent question its effectiveness.
The poll was conducted by telephone exclusively for ABC-7 Eyewitness News and included a sample of 500 residents living in New York City.
