Philadelphia -- The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has awarded $2 million in grants to the city of Philadelphia to support an advertising and educational campaign to boost participation in curbside recycling.

The "Don't Trash a Good Thing" campaign began airing March 18, 2002, and will run through June, using print, radio, television and direct marketing to deliver its message.

Funding for the grant comes from Section 902 of the state's Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act, which will reimburse the city for its outreach efforts and collection equipment. The grant provides $1.13 million for public education and $870,000 for the purchase of 10 recycling collection vehicles to be used throughout the city.
