Waste Management To Pay $775,000 in EPA Settlement

Boston -- Houston-based Waste Management Inc. has agreed to pay a $775,000 civil penalty and spend $2.6 million on environmental projects to improve air quality and help decontaminate a public waterfront property in East Boston, stemming from a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Washington, D.C., charge that the company improperly handled refrigerators and air conditioners in the area.

According to the EPA, the mishandling probably resulted in the illegal release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydro CFCs into the atmosphere, a violation of the Clean Air Act.
