Columbia, Mo., Explores Automated Trash Collection

City officials began a public relations campaign Tuesday night to talk to residents about automated trash and recycling collection using roll carts, with more meetings planned to answer questions and take feedback.

About 70 people came to a Second Ward check-in meeting at Parkade Elementary School to discuss the proposal. Some challenged city officials’ assertions about the benefits of automated trash collection.

Public Works Director John Glascock and Sustainability Manager Barbara Buffaloe said an automated system would increase recycling, improve the environment and create safer working conditions.
