Some Businesses in Reno, Nev., Facing Fines for Not Using Waste Management
All businesses in violation of the franchise agreement received letters detailing that they must respond within 30 days or receive a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

In November 2012, the city of Reno, Nev., signed a franchise agreement with Waste Management requiring all businesses to use Waste Management as its waste hauler. But not all businesses were supportive or aware this agreement, and that’s now presenting them with possible fines and jail time.
Recently, all businesses in violation of the franchise agreement received letters detailing that they must respond within 30 days or receive a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. If the businesses chose to appeal the citation, they will pay $500.
The franchise agreement and citation notices will be discussed on November 8 at the Reno City Council meeting.

Back in November 2012, the city of Reno signed a franchise agreement with Waste Management, requiring all Reno businesses to use WM as its waste hauler.
Not all business owners, however, are on board with the agreement -- or even knew about it to begin with.
Business owner Mark McKinnon said he had "no clue" about the city's franchise agreement until December 2016 when he received a cease and desist letter from Waste Management's local law firm for using Green Solutions as his business park's recycling service. Less than a year later, on Oct. 13, 2017, he received a notice of violation from the city.
