Austin officials have halted new city waste collection contracts amid political fights over their execution, ultimately delaying the start of the city’s new residential curbside composting services from June to the fall or later.
Last week, City Council members responded to waste companies’ complaints that the contracting process was unfair by voting in favor of temporarily lifting a ban on lobbying during contract solicitations so that those companies can voice their opinions on city waste policies. Additionally, any new contracts will be on hold until a working group reviewing the issues reports back on June 1.

An intended rollout of residential composting services initially set for June won’t begin until at least the fall.
And over at Hornsby Bend, mounds of sludge-based compost from the city’s wastewater treatment operations are piling up without anyone to haul it away.
Both are the result of Austin officials hitting the pause button on new city waste collection contracts amid political fights over their execution.
