Bigbelly Smart Compost Collect Over 1,000 Pounds of Food Scraps in First Month in Arlington, VA

Arlington, Va. has installed Bigbelly Smart Compost bins, making it easier for residents living in apartments to compost their food scraps.

Arlington, Va. has installed Bigbelly Smart Compost bins, making it easier for residents living in apartments to compost their food scraps.

The city has put up 14 Bigbelly Smart Composting bins in the area, working to keep food scraps out of landfills and making it simple for locals to compost food waste and food-soiled paper. Bins can be used simply by downloading the app and scanning a QR code to unlock the bins to dispose of food scraps.

The Smart Composting bins were funded through a Virginia Litter Prevention and Recycling Grant. Installation of the bins began on July 9 and have collected over 1,000 pounds of food was since. Arlington County is working with property owners to raise awareness of the new bins and has plans to host events throughout the summer to provide education and answer questions.
