California's Organic Waste Law Takes Effect

California's residents and establishments now have to divert their organic waste from landfills. SB1383 went into effect on January 1, 2022.

The legislation aims to reduce organic waste disposal by 75% from the 2014 level by 2025. In Napa, 99 percent of homes have composting service while only a third of schools and businesses have service.

However, Napa has the resources in place to carry out the requirements of SB1383 while many other jurisdictions do not.
