Firm Withdraws Plan for Controversial Landfill in Memphis

After meeting with residents, Solomito Land Planning says the company found people divided over the a proposed plan to expand a landfill that’s near a Memphis school. As a result, the firm has withdrawn the proposal from the Land Use Control Board.

Memphis Wrecking Co. had proposed to build a Class III landfill, which is used for demolition waste such as unrecyclable concrete and other building materials like steel, lumber and bricks, in a neighborhood near the Whitney Achievement Elementary School. Community members had raised their concerns on the plan.

A landfill controversy is over in Frayser, after the company who prosed an expansion near Whitney Elementary School withdrew the application.

In a letter, Solomito Land Planning said it had been working with Memphis Wrecking Company, Inc., and meeting with the community about their concerns about the proposal. Steven Williamson, owner of Memphis Wrecking, had said the landfill would be more than the length of two and half football fields away from the school.
