The waste and recycling industry is embracing the world of the Internet of Things (IoT) by developing digitized trash bins, sensors that detect fill levels and more.
One company utilizing IoT to make trash bins smarter is Finland-based Lehtovuori Oy, which is about to launch a sensor that measures the fill rate of trash bins and a new garbage collection system that uses solar power to compress the contents of the bin before collection, measures the fill rate and automatically notifies the collection services when the bins need to be emptied.

26-year-old Eero Ojanen became CEO of Lehtovuori Oy a couple of weeks ago – a family business that deals in trash bins, info tables and park benches. He’s taken on the job with clear objectives, "I want to double our revenues within five years and 90% of the growth is going to come from exports."
Lehtovuori was originally founded in 1945, but the current structure of the business is the result of multiple mergers over the past 15 years. In 2002, Eero Ojanen’s father purchased Arvemet, who were making trash bins and ashtrays for Lassila & Tikanoja. In 2013, Arvemet purchased Lehtovuori, the oldest environmental business still operating in Finland. Additional M&A activity over the years widened the product range further and made Lehtovuori into the local market leader it is today.
A push to into IoT is to set the trajectory towards the ambitious goals.
