Indiana’s Largest RNG Plant Opens at Landfill

Indiana’s largest renewable natural gas (RNG) plant has just opened. The Indy High BTU facility is located at the Indianapolis South Side Landfill and will convert methane gas into RNG.

SWR Magazine reports that the Indy High BTU will begin supplying Kinetrex Energy with RNG, which Kinetrex will turn into liquefied natural gas (LNG) and sell to Midwest-U.S. transportation fleets. Kinetrex recently announced a six-year agreement with UPS to supply the global transportation company with up to 52.5 million gallons of LNG for its Class 8, LNG-powered fleets in Chicago; Toledo, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; St. Louis and Indianapolis.

The largest renewable natural gas (RNG) plant in Indiana opens today. The Indy High BTU plant at the Indianapolis South Side Landfill will convert methane gas into approximately eight million gallons of pipeline-quality each year.

“This is an exciting day for our city,” said Indianapolis mayor Joe Hogsett, who performed ribbon cutting honours at the opening ceremony earlier this month.

“We are pleased to see Kinetrex Energy, a homegrown-Indianapolis company, spearheading the effort to provide cleaner, renewable fuel for transportation across the Midwest.”
