Republic Services Inc. said it will build a natural gas fueling station in Indianapolis and add 60 vehicles using that fuel to its fleet there in 2012.

“Natural gas continues to play an increasingly important role in the U.S. transportation market,” said Kevin Walbridge, executive vice president of Republic, in a news release. “With its relatively low cost per gallon equivalent and its clean-burning properties, natural gas offers a favorable solution for fleet managers who are trying to manage operating costs.”
In September Republic opened a compressed natural gas refueling facility in Commerce City, Colo., as part of a $5 million investment in converting the company’s 140 Denver-area trucks to compressed natural gas.

Republic said it operates the sixth largest commercial fleet in the country. The Phoenix-based firm has raised its focus on natural gas and is adding an increasing number of natural gas vehicles to its fleet each year. Currently, Republic operates more than 700 natural gas collection vehicles.
