Since 2012, Vermont's Universal Recycling Law (Act 148) has been updated three times: in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The measure has caused a statewide composting spike after banning food scraps from landfills.
Disposal of food waste in landfills was effectively banned on July 1, 2020 with the third revision. Companies such as Music Mountain Compost are seeing an influx of signups in the residential and commercial sectors.
Vermont's Department of Environmental Conservation says that the number of food scrap haulers more than tripled in 2021 to 45 haulers, up from 12 in 2012.
