Ikea Works to Slash Food Waste by 50% by 2020

Currently, each of the company’s 400 stores generates about 300 kilograms of food waste per day.

Furniture retailer Ikea has set a goal to slash its food waste by 50 percent by 2020, ultimately saving money and reducing its environmental footprint.

Currently, each of the company’s 400 stores generates about 300 kilograms of food waste per day. And last year alone, Ikea discarded approximately 43,000 tons of food waste.

Ikea, which as well as being the No.1 furniture retailer also runs one of the world's biggest restaurant chains, aims to halve its food waste in three years to save money and reduce its environmental footprint.

Daily food waste at each of the Swedish company's nearly 400 in-store self-service outlets, known for their trademark meatballs, averages some 300 kilograms, Ylva Magnusson, a spokeswoman for Ikea Food Services, said on Monday.
