Is Farmed Seafood Destined for Landfills?
September 18, 2020
A new report by Planet Tracker says that an oversupply of seafood means a large quantity could end up in landfills.
The seafood industry has a broken supply chain and bottlenecks can be found at both processors and distributors. If the seafood market was working efficiently, harvesting output would have fallen more dramatically. However, lower seafood prices have failed to stop the oversupply and seafood waste is growing.
Many fish farmers are unable to sell their harvest, which has required them to hold onto the fish or destroy them. For instance, in Indonesia and Vietnam they are harvesting seafood, but they are unable to access international markets because of logistical disruptions. And in other places processing facilities have also been affected due to COVID-19 quarantines.
