Lawrence to Become Second Mercer County Town to Launch Organic Waste Recycling Program
January 16, 2015
The town is set to launch its organic waste recycling program March 1,becoming the second in Mercer County to do so after nearly a year of soliciting interest from residents.
“One of our initial goals is not so much about saving money or producing compost,” Tahirih Smith, executive director of Sustainable Lawrence, said Wednesday. “This is just a step toward thinking about the way we produce waste.”
Council unanimously awarded a five-year contract to Central Jersey Waste and Recycling of Ewing in December 2013 for weekly collection and disposal of organic waste, which includes items such as sticks, coffee grounds and eggshells. The township was awarded a $20,000 Sustainable Jersey Small Grant in March to kick-start the program.
