8:00 AM - 9:15 AM
Room: W316
Session Number: M112
When looking at a landfill, there’s more than meets the eye. There are many layers to a landfill, and many considerations that must be taken seriously in order for a landfill to operate effectively and efficiently. One consideration is leachate management and treatment, which is becoming one of the largest operating costs for landfill owners and operators. In this session, attendees will learn best practices for managing and treating leachate, cost-saving strategies, various techniques for handling leachate, information on EPA’s plan to regulate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in leachate, side effects of clogging and scaling, and more.
Food Recovery Forum/Organics Keynote: Solutions for Food Waste and Wasted Food Prevention, Reduction, and Recovery; Actions for 50% Reduction by 2030
8:30 AM - 9:45 AM PT
Room: W224
Session Number: MFRF111
The United States 2030 Food Loss and Waste Reduction Goal seeks to cut food loss and waste in half by 2030. With 8 years to go, what is happening across the country to achieve this goal? While measuring food waste reduction nationally is still a big challenge, municipalities, states, and the federal government are taking action to reduce food waste both at the policy and programmatic levels. Kick-off this year’s WasteExpo Food Recovery Forum by getting a high-level overview of solutions and actions on the 50% reduction goal across sectors and geographies.
Super Session: Challenges and Opportunities of EPR (Part 1)
8:30 AM - 9:45 AM PT
Room: W213
Session Number: M114
Who should be responsible for the lifecycle of a product? Taxpayers? Manufacturers? That is one of the hard-hitting debates surrounding extended producer responsibility (EPR) policies, which aim to shift the cost of residential recycling from taxpayers to product manufacturers. In this session, you’ll learn about two EPR policies that have been passed and implemented in the U.S., as well as the challenges and opportunities that come along with those policies. In addition you’ll learn about bottle bills and their role in EPR. Part one will feature insights from regulators and materials recovery facility operators, and part two will include perspectives from a range of brand owners.
Super Session: Understanding PFAS and Its Complexities (Part 1)
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM PT
Room: W316
Session Number: M412
Discussions around per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are on the rise, as these “emerging contaminants” are persistent in the environment and resistant to environmental degradation. In 2021’s Super Session, we discussed what PFAS are and how they can be treated. This year, we’re picking up where we left off and will take a further dive beyond the basics of PFAS. In part one, speakers will provide current research and legislation and regulation updates, and in part two, they will cover treatment options and technologies.
