Many factors can contribute to a driver's NASCAR win, but who would have thought trash could save the day? That's just what happened to Jeremy Mayfield, who won an August Nextel Cup race.

According to Mayfield's pit crew chief, his car's grilles kept catching trash from the stands all day, which caused the engine to run hot. That in turn caused horsepower to decline, leading to an increase in fuel efficiency. And of course, better fuel efficiency means fewer pitstops.

Maybe drivers who are behind in the season standings should instruct their pit crews to keep piles of trash on hand.
