MANY WASTE AGE READERS WORK for companies that are members of the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) or the Waste Equipment Technology Association (WASTEC). Yet, a lot of them are unaware of the many services and resources NSWMA and WASTEC offer: information, training and recognition.

Internet Resources

Visit www.nswma.org, www.wastec.org and www.envasns.org for industry information, updates on regulatory and legislative issues, an association events calendar, and publications and statistics. NSWMA's Web site provides access to research papers on subjects such as solid waste data and tipping fees. WASTEC's Web site has an online buyer's guide, which lists the products and services that members provide, along with their contact information. Both sites also have a members-only section to help the association keep in touch.

Publications and Statistics

NSWMA and WASTEC have a variety of useful publications and statistical information. Books, DVDs and CDs, covering topics such as safety and training for drivers, stationary compactor ratings, ANSI Z245 standards and more, are available for purchase. WASTEC members who participate in the Market Activity Index Program or the Product Production Statistics Program receive quarterly reports that allow companies to gauge their performance against others in the industry. NSWMA's weekly e-newsletter updates members about current issues affecting waste companies.

Insurance

Exclusive property and casualty insurance programs for solid waste service companies are available through EIA's insurance programs. In partnership with Zurich North America and Americana Program Underwriters, EIA can give access to coverage including auto liability, general liability, workers' compensation, umbrella, property and environmental impairment liability. WASTEC manufacturers and distributors have a program tailored to their needs that includes general liability and garage keeper's liability.

Safety

NSWMA's and WASTEC's commitment to safety is apparent in many of our programs and initiatives. Attend one of our “Improving Workplace Safety in the Solid Waste Industry” seminars to learn how to reduce accidents and injuries and improve safety programs. Purchase one of the videos or DVDs from our “Be Safe, Be Proud” series to supplement your safety training program, or subscribe to our new e-newsletter, Safety Monday, which provides a quick safety tip each week. WASTEC members can help draft ANSI Z245 standards on products including mobile collection and transportation equipment, stationary compactors, balers and size reduction equipment. These standards define safety and design compatibility requirements.

Meetings

Both NSWMA and WASTEC members are encouraged to attend NSWMA chapter and annual meetings for educational and networking opportunities and to help identify local legislative and regulatory needs. The Executive Roundtable meeting is a great way for managers and executives to recharge their batteries and gain some business insight. Don't forget about WasteExpo — all NSWMA and WASTEC members who exhibit receive a discount on their booth space and a contribution towards their dues.

Recognition

One of the highlights of working in the waste industry is recognizing the people who make it great. NSWMA's Driver of the Year program is designed to honor drivers committed to safety, quality and service. Nominating one or more of your drivers is a great way to show how much you value their hard work and dedication. WASTEC also bestows Employee of the Year awards in three categories: engineering, production and sales/marketing. This program offers a unique opportunity for members to recognize their employees at the industry level. EIA's Hall of Fame recognizes industry leaders who have made a difference in the industry over the long-term.

Most importantly, remember the staff in the regional offices and at EIA's headquarters who are here to help and answer your questions. Give us a call or send us an e-mail; we can lend a hand!
