Bloomberg Meets with City Council To Discuss Recycling

New York -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has suggested that a deal could be in progress to save part of the city's recycling program. Bloomberg originally proposed that everything but paper recycling be suspended for 18 months to save about $57 million from the budget.

"Everybody wants to do what's right for the environment, but there is no market for plastic and glass," Bloomberg said in a WABC/Channel 7 interview yesterday. "So we collect it at great expense and throw it away, and we don't have the money to do that."

Bloomberg has been talking with the city council about the recycling program, as they are expected to finalize the budget on June 30. The new budget period begins on July 1.
