Rahway, N.J. -- Covanta Energy Corp. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from creditors. Covanta, which operates the boiler and generator section of the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority's (CRRA) waste-to-energy plant in Hartford, plans to raise disposal fees in the 70 participating mid-Connecticut towns to compensate for the loss.

The company also operates a smaller waste-to-energy facility in CRRA's Wallingford regional system.
