The Environmental Industry Associations (EIA), Washington, D.C., has been serving as the administrative sponsor and secretariat for the Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) Z245 since it began in 1972.
The ANSI Z245 standards, developed by the ASC, whose members are from the waste and recycling industries, are safety and design compatibility standards. These standards have garnered national recognition and demonstrate the industry's ability to police itself, to develop top quality products, and to ensure employee safety and health. Also, the standards provide a basis for technological improvements to enhance industry competitiveness.
Specifically, ANSI Z245 standards address the safety of those involved in a product's life cycle. This includes product manufacturers, installers, rebuilders and product users, such as waste haulers, retail and wholesale stores and their employees, and the public. The standards contain clauses addressing manufacturer, installer, rebuilder, and user requirements and responsibilities.
Additionally, the standards state what manufacturers must do to make waste industry and recycling equipment safe. The onus is on manufacturers to provide operating, installation and maintenance instructions, and other instructions, such as how users can safely use their products.
The following are a library of ANSI Z245 standards for Equipment Technology and Operations for Wastes and Recyclable Materials:
ANSI Z245.1-1999. Standards for mobile wastes and recyclable materials collection, transportation, and compaction equipment. Establishes safety requirements for the manufacture, design, reconstruction, modification, maintenance, service, operation, and installation (where applicable) of mobile collecting, transporting, and compacting equipment.
ANSI Z245.2-1997. Standards for stationary compactors. Establishes safety requirements for the manufacture, reconstruction, modification, maintenance, service, operation and installation (where applicable) of stationary compacting equipment.
ANSI Z245.30-1999. Standards for waste containers. Establishes safety requirements for the manufacture, reconstruction, use, modification, maintenance, service, operation, and installation (where applicable) of containers, two-wheeled carts and two-wheeled container lifters.
ANSI Z245.41-1977. Standards for processing facilities of commingled recyclable materials. Establishes safety requirements for material recovery facilities (MRFs).
ANSI Z245.5-1997. Standards for baling equipment. Establishes safety requirements for the manufacture, installation, reconstruction, modification, maintenance of baler operations.
Z245.60-1999. Standards for waste containers. Facilitates waste containers dimensional compatibility and containers and equipment identification that are designed to lift and dump.
Currently, the ASC is drafting two new standards, which include:
Draft ANSI Z245.70. Standards for size reduction equipment. Establishes safety requirements for industrial or commercial size reduction equipment.
Draft ANSI Z245.7A. Standards for mobile industrial tub grinders. Safety requirements protect personnel during setup, normal operation, maintenance and service of mobile industrial tub grinders.
