The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the state of Illinois have partnered to create the Scrap Tire Cleanup Guidebook. The book is aimed at teaching tire manufacturers, state and local governments, auto recyclers and collectors how to properly recycle scrap tires. Millions of tires have accumulated in stockpiles over the past several decades, providing a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes. Government agencies have also spent millions of dollars fighting tire fires that resulted from lightening strikes, equipment malfunctions or arson. The guidebook can be found at www.epa.gov/reg5rcra/wptdiv/solidwaste/tires/guidance.
