Fashionable Trash

Sometimes, one man's trash is another man's hat. Designer Kathleen Tesnakis has formed an entire line of clothing, eko logic, using discarded clothing and scrap fabric. To find fodder for the eight-year-old line, Tesnakis pilfers through trash bins, as well as buys from places such as used clothing wholesalers. With the scraps, she makes items such as dresses, skirts, sweater vests, funky hats, gloves and scarves. By making new garments, approximately 2,000 pounds of cashmere each week, among other materials, are recycled.
Tesnakis says she gets her materials cheaply — yet her ski-style hats retail for about $48. Apparently, it does pay to recycle.
