Aerosol cans are made from either steel or aluminum, with a tin coating.
Consumer aerosol products produced in the United States have not used chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) since 1978, when they were banned.
Empty aerosol containers are recyclable, just like all other empty steel or aluminum cans.
The steel used to make aerosol cans contains about 25 percent recycled metal.
Tin is recovered during processing, and plastic components are burned during reheating.
More than 5,000 North American communities include empty aerosol cans in their recycling programs.
