  • Aerosol cans are made from either steel or aluminum, with a tin coating.

  • Consumer aerosol products produced in the United States have not used chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) since 1978, when they were banned.

  • Empty aerosol containers are recyclable, just like all other empty steel or aluminum cans.

  • The steel used to make aerosol cans contains about 25 percent recycled metal.

  • Tin is recovered during processing, and plastic components are burned during reheating.

  • More than 5,000 North American communities include empty aerosol cans in their recycling programs.
