This Waste Age product survey includes a sampling of the latest in landfill liners, geotextiles and erosion control products.
Agru America Inc., Kingwood, Texas, manufactures high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) geomembranes for landfill lining and capping, including Microspike HDPE and LLDPE. The company also produces Drain Liner, which has been designed to eliminate the need for geonets and geocomposites, and SureGrip, a concrete protection liner.
American Excelsior Company's Earth Science division, Arlington, Texas, manufactures erosion control products, including Curlex biodegradable blankets, which are made of aged Aspen wood fiber and are placed over the soil in the final landfill cap process. The company's Tri-Lock Articulated Concrete Block system is designed to prevent erosion on steep slopes, and its Pec-Mat synthetic monofilament netting, which comes in a 6-foot wide roll, is designed for permanent erosion control.
Aqua-Shed Technologies Inc., Florence, S.C., offers a non-slip membrane made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and HDPE. It is available pre-glued on one or both sides; is puncture-resistant; and is designed to eliminate terracing, rainwater infiltration and gas and odor emission. All erosion control products include berm flaps that do not need welding and slope drainage technology.
Belton Industries Inc., Atlanta, manufactures Anti-Wash and Geojute, 100 percent biodegradable erosion control fabrics. Made of jute, the fabrics last one to two growing seasons before biodegrading completely. Plantings can be made through the blanket after installation. The fabrics also will accept hydro seeding or hand seeding after installation.
Carthage Mills, Cincinnati, offers a line of geosynthetics, including multi-purpose nonwoven geotextiles, woven monofilaments for filtration, high-strength wovens for caps and Raugrid geogrids for slope reinforcement. The newest product, an alternative daily cover, is custom-fabricated with reinforcing straps and D-rings for lifting and dragging.
Cetco, Arlington Heights Ill., offers the Bentomet ST, Claymax 200R and Bentomet DN liners. The Bentomet ST is a thin liner with a layer of bentonite clay between non-woven and woven polypropylene (PP) geotextiles, which have fibers punched through them to bind the material. The Claymax 200R is also a clay-filled liner, but it has two woven geotextile layers for flatter surfaces. The Bentomet DN, made for steep slopes, is a double non-woven liner with a layer of bentonite clay.
Environmental Liners Inc. , Cortez, Colo., makes flexible membrane liners made from polypropylene, PVC, Hypalon and XR-5 using a dielectric seaming technique. The company also installs liners and provides consultation before and after liner installation.
Environmental Protection Inc., Mancelona, Mich., manufactures and installs PVC geomembrane liners nationwide. The custom-fabricated liners come with a 20-year warranty and can be made up to 30,000 square feet.
Fluid Systems, Aurora, Ill., offers Sani-Cover, a daily landfill cover made from woven and non-woven PP geotextiles as well as thin polyethylene. It is designed to divert rainwater away from the cell to prevent leachate generation. Features include reinforcement webbing around the perimeter, lift loops for deployment, standard and custom panel sizes, fire retardant and waterproof material.
GeoComp Inc., Shelby, N.C., features PP and polyester geotextiles. The geotextiles are used to cushion landfill liners and come in varieties of 6 ounces per square yard to 100 ounces per square yard and are up to 35 feet wide.
GeoPacific Lining Inc., Seattle, installs geosynthetic liners and associated products in private and public landfills, hazardous waste facilities and other environmentally sensitive projects nationwide. Liners are manufactured using HDPE, LLDPE, PVC or geosynthetic clay. The company also installs PP floating covers.
GSE Lining Technology, Houston, makes geomembranes, including the GSE Conductive HDPE liner that allows spark testing to detect post-installation damage and potential leaks. The GSE White is a light-reflective liner made with HDPE and is designed to prevent heat buildup, minimizing the risk of wrinkles and thermal expansion. The GundSeal geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) has a double-barrier system of HDPE and sodium bentonite, which provides a self-sealing feature. Drainage products, including nets and net/textile composites, also are available.
Huesker Inc., Charlotte, N.C., offers Fortrac Geogrids to reinforce base soils during landfill cell expansions. The geogrid, made of high-tenacity polyester yarns, also is designed to act as a veneer reinforcement for cover soils placed on steep side slopes and to retain soil cover on those slopes. The geogrid includes a 20-year material warranty.
Leak Location Services Inc., San Antonio, Texas, provides two types of geomembrane leak location for landfills, ponds and tanks. The Electrical Leak Imaging Method (ELIM) is a permanent monitoring system designed to locate leaks after waste has been added to the landfill. The mobile system uses manual measurements to detect leaks under soil cover or under water before waste is added.
MPC Containment Systems Ltd., Chicago, manufactures and installs floating covers, tank and landfill liners, and flexible membrane liners for tank dikes. Floating covers are made of PP, XR5, Chemgard, Watergard or other chemical-resistant materials. Landfill liners typically are made of HDPE plastic. Most products are covered by a 20-year warranty.
National Seal Co., Aurora, Ill., manufactures and distributes geosynthetic materials for environmental and civil engineering applications, including Dura Seal HD and LL geomembrane liners. The company also manufactures and distributes Friction Seal textured geomembrane liners, Bentofix thermal lock GCLs, Poly-Net HDPE drainage nets, Tex-Net ultra geocomposite, Hydrotex fabric formed concrete, the GeoLok cellular confinement system, geotextiles, geogrids and polyethylene pipe.
Odin International Inc., Oconomowoc, Wis., manufactures alternative daily covers made of woven and reinforced polyethylene and PP. Large covers are fabricated with pipe loops and seat belt webbing with D-rings for placement. The company also manufactures pre-made liners for lagoons and settlement ponds, privacy netting for the perimeter of a landfill and its working face, interim stormwater diversion tarps and covers, truck tarps, and roll-off and transfer trailer tarps.
Poly Flex Inc., Grand Prairie, Texas, sells and installs smooth and textured HDPE and LLDPE geomembranes for containment of solid and liquid waste. Applications include landfills, caps, lagoons, ponds, canals and leach pads. The Poly Flex Coextruded Textured SE geomembrane has a 7 inch smooth edge on both sides of the liner.
Reef Industries Inc., Houston, offers Permalon high-density landfill covers for daily and long-term applications. The company's polyethylene covers are designed to provide tear resistance and can be as large as 1 acre. They come with a one-year warranty. Permalon also can be used for final closure.
Synthetic Industries, Chattanooga, Tenn., manufactures PP landfill liners and heavy weight, non-woven cushions that are placed above and beneath the liner. Other landfill products, including erosion control matting and high-strength geotextiles for slope reinforcement, along with fabrics for filtration and gas venting also are available.
Valoraction, a division of GSI Environment Inc. , Sherbrooke, Prince Edward Island, Canada, offers the Hydrostop landfill liner, a mix of sandy soil and sodium bentonite prepared on-site with a high performance mobile mixer that makes 275 tons per hour. Geomembranes can be placed directly over Hydrostop membranes for composite liner production. The product is designed to offer permeability co-efficients of 10 -7 or 10 -8 centimeters per second. In addition, Hydrostop also can be applied with sand bentonite liners for landfill surface capping.
Watersaver Co. Inc., Denver, offers geomembrane liners with multi-axial elongation for puncture resistance and stress cracking prevention. The company's resinbased liners come in PVC varieties, as well as PP varieties that offer ultraviolet stability and are scrim reinforced.
