Net income for the quarter was $799,614 compared to $958,655 for the quarter ending March 31, 1999.

ATG Inc., Fremont, Calif., has announced that revenue for the quarter ending March 31, 2000, was $11.1 million, compared to $12.9 million for the same quarter in 1999. The company attributed the decrease to a shortfall involved in its Oak Ridge, Tenn., facility. ATG Inc. also has completed a $5.375 million private placement of approximately 2.7 million shares of common stock through Taglich Brothers Inc., New York. The net proceeds from this placement will be used to increase the production capacity of ATG's waste processing system at the company's Richland, Wash., facility.

Sales Waste Connections Inc., Scottsdale, Ariz., has purchased one landfill in Garden City, Kan., and a transfer station and a collection operation in Wichita, Kan., from Allied Waste Industries Inc., Scottsdale, Ariz.

Waste Industries Inc., Raleigh, N.C., has sold its collections operations in Ooltewah, Tenn., and Dalton, Ga., to Allied Waste Industries, Scottsdale, Ariz. Waste Industries also has purchased Allied/BFI's Sampson County landfill in Roseboro, N.C., and collections operations in Fayetteville, N.C.

HERSHEY, PA. - Environmental awareness has become a circus, at least at chocolate playland Hersheypark, an amusement park.

The Hersheypark Green Team, a group that educates about half the park's 2 million visitors about environmental issues, has been performing a show for children at the park since 1993. The circus-like program focuses on themes such as recycling and cleaning up litter, and features clowns who juggle balls and clubs, ride a unicycle and walk on huge balls called rolla bollas, says Kathy Burrows, Hersheypark public relations manager. "The performers also do sleight-of-hand tricks and illusions," she says. "They involve the audience by bringing kids up to be in the skits."

Burrows says the Green Team's show is a unique way to relay an environmentally sound message. "It is important to let our visitors know that we recycle and that we buy recycled products. It always has been our goal to be environmentally conscious," she says. "The show is an extension of that goal, and it teaches while it entertains, so people are more likely to retain information."

Burrows says she's already seen positive benefits. In 1999, Hersheypark recycled 156 tons of cardboard, 35 tons of office paper, 5 tons of newspaper, 25 tons of glass, 49 tons of steel and 8 tons of used oil. "I have noticed that kids are more responsive [to environmental concerns] by going a couple of extra feet to throw cans in our recycling bins," she says.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Harrisburg, Pa., awarded Hersheypark a $15,000 grant this year from its Clean Air Fund to sponsor the Green Team, according to Jeff McCloud, DEP information specialist. " I was at Hersheypark and I happened to see the show. I thought it would be a great thing for the DEP to be involved with to get our message across," he says.

The DEP also supplied the Green Team with brochures and fact sheets on environmental issues, McCloud adds. "We have some curriculum that we have developed for teachers, so we supplied the information, and Hersheypark used it to develop the show.

"I think everybody is concerned about the environment," McCloud continues. "By partnering with Hersheypark, we can get our message out and educate the public on what they can do to help the environment."

The Hersheypark Green Team performs five half-hour shows every afternoon through Labor Day. Although there are five performers, four of the five participate each day. For information, call Hersheypark, (717) 534-3900.
