NWRA Safety Committee Elects New Leadership

Michael Hughes of Casella Waste Systems and Jeff Martin of Waste Management were elected chairman and vice chairman, respectively.

The National Waste & Recycling Association’s (NWRA) Safety Committee elected new leadership during its meeting in Yipsilanti, Mich.

Michael Hughes, corporate director of safety and compliance at Casella Waste Systems, was elected chairman, and Jeff Martin, vice president of safety services at Waste Management, was elected vice chairman.

Current co-chairs Jim Olson, senior vice president of safety at Republic Services, and Shawn Mandel, vice president of safety and risk at Waste Connections, Inc., will serve as chairmen emeriti.

“NWRA and its member companies are committed to ensuring each employee returns home safely at the end of his or her shift. The Safety Committee helps to establish best practices to keep everyone in the waste and recycling industry safe. We thank Jim and Shane for their service and look forward to working with them in their new role,” said NWRA Vice President of Safety and Standards Kirk Sander in a statement.

Hughes and Martin will serve until the next election at WasteExpo in the spring.
