Brownfields Grants Awarded to NJ Sites

Trenton, N.J. -- The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) has approved 13 new grants to 11 towns and cities for municipal environmental Brownfields cleanup projects totaling nearly $1.7 million. The projects approved by the NJEDA under the Hazardous Discharge Site Remediation (HDSR) program during October are located in Bayonne, Buena, East Brunswick, Glassboro, Linden, Marlboro, Perth Amboy, Plainfield, Scotch Plains, Trenton and Woodbridge.

Haulers, Truckmakers Report Third Quarter Fiscal Results Westport, Conn. -- Terex Corp. has reported third quarter net income before restructuring charges of $9 million, compared with net income of $17.5 million for the same quarter last year. Restructuring charges in the third quarter totaled $19.9 million and included the consolidation of 11 facilities.

Stockholm, Sweden -- Volvo has reported a $144 million third quarter loss, or 1.54 billion kronor, compared with net income of 369 million kronor for the same quarter last year. Sales increased to $3.87 billion, or 41.1 billion kronor, compared with 27.9 billion kronor for the same quarter last year.

Warrenton, Ore. -- Ag-Bag International Ltd. has reported net income of $385,478 for the third quarter of 2001, compared with net income of $511,192 for the same quarter last year. Net sales for the third quarter totaled $10.15 million, compared with net sales of $10.70 million for the same quarter last year.

Partnership Combines Recycling, Charities and Home-Building Washington, D.C. -- The Aluminum Cans Build Habitat for Humanity Homes (ACBHHH) program is kicking off its fourth year this Saturday, Oct. 27, on Make a Difference Day. The ACBHHH is a partnership between The Aluminum Association and Habitat for Humanity International to encourage recycling and make a contribution to deserving communities.

The partnership includes a recycling network of more than 400 Habitat affiliates and 2,200 recycling centers throughout the United States. Money earned from recycled aluminum cans goes directly to Habitat to build homes.

The ACBHHH program has recycled more than 500,000 pounds of cans since its inception in 1998. In 2000, more than $65 billion was paid out by the aluminum industry in recycling proceeds. According to Habitat, if one percent of cans could be captured for Habitat, 250 homes could be build each year.

Trucking Regulations Get Tighter in Michigan

Lansing, Mich. -- The Michigan Public Service Commission has issued new rules for people applying for state hazardous materials hauling licenses. The new rules require more extensive background checks for hauling companies and their drivers, including criminal background checks and inspections of company facilities by the State Police. A 10-year employment history also will be conducted for all applicants and drivers, and driving records will be checked through the Secretary of State's office.

Ugianskis Earns Show Industry Award Stamford, Conn. -- Primedia Exhibitions Show Director Rita Ugianskis was awarded the Expo Group Show Manager of the Year Award for the trade show industry, noting her work on WasteExpo 2001.

Ugianskis will receive her award in December at the awards ceremony during the annual IAEM Conference, Chicago. A $1,000 award also will be given to the charity or educational institution of her choice.

NEWSBRIEFS: Acquisitions, Agreement, etc. vAcquisitions

-A subsidiary of Allied Waste Industries Inc., Scottsdale, Ariz., has entered a merger agreement to acquire Star Services Group Inc., Pompano Beach, Fla., in a cash transaction valued at approximately $34 million plus assumption of all of Star Services Group's long-term assets.

-Earth Tech, Long Beach, Calif., has acquired the environmental division of Cydsa S.A. de C.V., Monterrey, Mexico.

- IESI Corp., Haltom City, Texas, has completed nine acquisitions of operations located in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and. The newly acquired companies expect to generate at least $6 million in annual revenues for IESI. Companies in Texas include Best Little Trash Co., Waste Away Inc., Easy Disposal, Capital City Roll-Off Service and Dan's Disposal. In Oklahoma, acquisitions included Kan Haul Services Inc. In Louisiana, IESI acquired a municipal solid waste (MSW) transfer station and an MSW landfill operating contract with Tensas Parish from Twin Bridges Co. Inc. In Arkansas, IESI acquired the assets of Barron's Disposal Inc. and R-1 Disposal.

Agreement

- Autocar LLC, a subsidiary of Grand Vehicle Works Holdings LLC, Highland Park, Ill., has agreed to purchase the Xpeditor line of Class 8 low cab over engine (LCOE) trucks from Volvo Trucks North America Inc., Greensboro, N.C.

Announcement

-Cummins Inc., Columbus, Ind., has announced it is making a $400,000 investment to help underwrite the Seattle Diesel Solutions Program, which aims to demonstrate the ability to retrofit existing fleets of diesel engines to improve emissions.
