Harrisburg, Pa. -- Pennsylvania Governor Mark Schweiker has signed the state's 2003 budget, which includes a $4 per ton increase for tipping fees at state landfills.

The total taxpayer cost is estimated at $56 million per year. The first $50 million will go to the Growing Greener Environmental Stewardship Fund, and the rest will go to the state's general fund.

The tax increase, which brings tipping fees up to $7.25 per ton, will go into effect this week and is authorized until 2012.
