To keep South Carolina as beautiful as its postcards, an Anderson County environmental group is providing tarps for those who choose to go topless.
Keep America Beautiful (KAB) of Anderson County has teamed with Columbia, S.C.-based Palmetto Pride and created a tarp giveaway campaign to convince residents to cover their trucks and eliminate litter from highways.
State legislators donated $10,000 in August to get the program off the ground. And in mid-October, the campaign gave away 3,000 tarps and 12,000 bungee cords in less than six days at various Anderson County convenience centers, where residents drop off their trash and recyclables.
Currently, the campaign is being used as a model for a possible statewide 2002 Palmetto Pride campaign. KAB and Palmetto Pride also are looking to expand awareness of South Carolina's topless driving laws to trash haulers and businesses.
In Anderson County, it does not pay to go uncovered: fines range anywhere between $75 to $1,000.
