Quebec Law Enforces Treatment of Contaminated Soil Before Landfilling

Oakville, Ontario, Canada — Quebec has introduced a new law that restricts landfilling contaminated soil. Effective July 11, 2001, the new law, O.C. 843-2001, is an addition to the Quebec Environmental Quality Act and imposes requirements on the location, design and construction of contaminated soil landfill sites. Guidelines are in place to determinte types of contaminants and levels of contamination that can be disposed of in landfill sites. New regulations require at least 90 percent soil treatment prior to landfilling.
