Raleigh, N.C. -- Raleigh city council members have voted to adopt a pilot weekly curbside collection program, which will replace the current twice-a-week backyard pickup. Some council members had voted against the change because of concerns about buying the necessary equipment and potential layoffs. The city reportedly has said, however, that it will try to reposition the approximately 120 workers that will lose their jobs as a result of the new system. Guidelines also have been drawn that offer backyard options for people with disabilities or steep driveways, and require inspectors to ensure cans are not left on the curb. Mayor Charles Meeker has said the program could save the city $20 million in 10 years. The city plans to order 100,000 new green cans to replace old cans, and officials anticipate the program will be running citywide within six months.
