The Regional District of North Okanagan at the Greater Vernon Diversion & Disposal Facility held a waste composition study that found nearly half of its organic waste is comprised of avoidable food waste. The study divided the waste from all streams into 12 different categories with 121 sub-categories. The study also found that 5 percent of total waste was made up of textiles, which is significantly more than was found in a similar study taken in 2012, just ten years ago. Overall, the data is expected to benefit efforts to build an effective waste diversion stream in the region.
