OPINION POLL:

Do you believe OSHA should implement more ergonomic regulations or should businesses try to reduce workplace injuries through a voluntary education and prevention program?

a) more ergonomic regulations; b) develop voluntary programs; c) other

OPINION POLL RESULTS:

Do you agree with a recent federal court ruling allowing California smog officials to order public agencies with fleets of 15 or more to buy cleaner cars, buses and trucks?

You said: 57 percent, yes; 29 percent, no; 14 percent, other

"Absolutely! This ruling applies to all other vehicle fleets as well. Why not switch to CNG or LNG? The L.A. County San Districts already are producing these alternative fuels at the Puente Hills Landfill. Why not unload waste and fuel up all at one stop? It's no hardship to hauling companies because the larger ones (those with 15 or more collection trucks) will pass it onto their constituents (governmental or private) anyway. All of these large companies will be in the same boat when upgrading, so there are no inequities."

- Bob Healy, URS, San Jose, Calif.

"No, smog officials should not be allowed to institute fleet rules."

- Frank R. Caponi, Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, Whittier, Calif.

NEWS:

Landfill's National Historic Landmark Status Withdrawn

Fresno, Calif. -- U.S. Interior Secretary Gale Norton withdrew the Fresno Municipal Sanitary Landfill from its national historic landmark status on Tuesday. The landfill was added to the list of 2,350 historic sites on Aug. 27, but after learning from National Park Service advisory board members that the landfill was declared a toxic Superfund site in 1989, the site was removed. The administration claims it did not know about the Superfund classification until Tuesday.

New Tire Technologies on the Horizon

Everett, Wash. -- New radio frequency identification (RFID) tags designed to identify tire size, specific tire components and tire manufacture dates to help track tire warranties will be released in early 2002 by Intermec Technologies Corp. A new tire-tracking standard, called B-11, also is under development by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), which will help implement the RFID tag technology. The technology already is being used to track hazardous medical waste.

Labor Secretary Stresses Prevention to Reduce Worker Injuries

Washington, D.C. -- In a prepared statement before a Labor Department partnership program meeting in New Orleans on Monday, Labor Secretary Elaine Chao announced that she wants more emphasis on reducing workplace injuries through prevention and education, not just enforcement. Chao said she supports making voluntary programs a part of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and would like to expand voluntary program participation. But Chao will announce next month whether she'll proceed with a new ergonomics regulation to reduce workplace injuries or institute a voluntary policy.

EPA, Midwest Try to Solve Gas Crisis - Temporarily

Washington, D.C. -- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has temporarily relaxed standards on the gasoline sold by Citgo Petroleum Corp. in the Midwest to alleviate a recent price spike in the area. Under the agreement, Citgo will be able to sell inventories of autumn-grade gasoline for the remainder of the summer, which has a less stringent vapor pressure standard. The EPA has promised that the environmental impact will be minimal.

Waste Management Wins CIO Award

Houston -- Waste Management Inc. has received the CIO-100 Award from the International Data Group's (IDG) CIO magazine. Chief information officer (CIO) Tom Smith and his team earned the award for their work to stabilize and improve the company's business information systems.
