Philadelphia — To settle a lawsuit involving 1,600 people who say they were exposed to poisons from the Lipari landfill in Mantua, N.J., 12 companies that dumped hazardous wastes at the site will pay to monitor plaintiffs' health.

The settlement does not preclude plaintiffs from later seeking medical treatment costs. Defendants in the class-action case include Owens-Illinois, CBS, AT&T Technologies and Firestone Tire & Rubber Co.
