Homeland security is undoubtedly an important issue, but who knew that its coordination requires a Dale Carnegie management course? A recent “60 Minutes” report outlined the questionable spending of federal homeland security funds, including $100,000 that Washington Mayor Anthony Williams spent to send sanitation workers to a Dale Carnegie customer service and management course. Suffice to say, Dale Carnegie classes focus on improving one's image, interpersonal skills and confidence — and have nothing to do with emergency preparation. Williams' reasoning? The course would train workers to deal with “panicky customers” following a disaster. Trash might be the first thing on people's minds after a security emergency, but do you think that smells like a load of garbage?
