The State of Tennessee Moves Toward a Trash Crisis

A trash crisis has intensified in Tennessee over the past few months. 

Neighborhoods across the state are blocking new landfills and landfill expansions and a lack of a regional strategy for waste disposal and recycling has created various local approaches.  

The region is learning that solid waste policies and their consequences are interconnected. Today there are 95 different ways of handing trash in Tennessee and there is great urgency for local governments to collaborate. 

The entire region lags behind other major metropolitan areas that have adopted more progressive approaches that favor recycling, composting and less of a reliance on sending trash to a landfill.
