1. The 2022 Waste360 Top 50 in Waste and Recycling

After five years of not publishing a top companies list, Waste360 has decided to release a list of the top 50 waste and recycling businesses in North America. The list is based on 2021 revenues and states 50 of the largest companies in the industry.

2. Casella's Labbe Talks Using Landfills for Community Enhancement

Jeremy Labbe is a general manager with Casella Waste Systems after 17 years of involvement with the industry. While working in the waste industry, Labbe has worked on several projects meant to strengthen relationships with landfills and the communities they are placed in. His projects are creative examples of the ways landfills can utilize their supplies and land to better the area they fill.

3. DOE Targets Biofuel for Hard-to-Electrify Transportation Modes

While turning vehicles electric is a great way to limit Co2 emissions in some cases, it does not work seamlessly for all transportation modes. Due to this, the Department of Energy (DOE) is searching for other fuel alternatives that can be implemented for these transportation systems. One promising alternative is a biofuel derived from organic waste.

In the second installment of this DOE biofuel exploration series, Karidis talks with Valerie Reed, director of DOE’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), and Joshua Messner, a technology manager at BETO. BETO has been instrumental in the evolution of biofuels in the U.S., donating $124 million towards biofuel systems. With the federal government's goal of net zero emissions by 2050, this investment is taking the country one step closer.
