A 16-foot Styrofoam tree by Hector Dio Mendoza sits outside the artist's studio at a San Francisco transfer station owned by Norcal Waste Systems Inc. Mendoza is a participant in San Francisco-based Norcal's Artist-in-Residence program, in which local artists serve four- to six-month residencies at the station. The artists are given access to solid waste brought in by self-haulers. Each quarter, the public is invited to the studio to view the resulting art.
