Acquisitions

  • Lynnfield, Mass.-based GreenMan Technologies Inc. has signed a letter of intent to acquire all of the Iowa-based tire collection and processing operations of Salt Lake City-based Utah Tire Recyclers Inc. (UT). GreenMan will manage the operations under the name GreenMan Technologies of Iowa Inc.

  • Houston-based GSE Lining Technology Inc. has acquired Serrot International Inc., Henderson, Nev., from Houston-based Waste Management Inc.

  • RecycleNet Corp., Guelph, Ontario, Canada, has acquired Global Recycling Network (GRN), also based in Guelph.



Alliances

  • Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Christie Whitman has signed a memorandum of understanding with Habitat for Humanity International, Americus, Ga., to build energy-efficient housing on former brownfields properties throughout the country.

  • Colbond Geosynthetics, Enka, N.C., has announced an alliance with Green & Bio Tech Inc., Ridgefield, N.J., to test their erosion control products together.



Announcements

  • Houston-based Waste Management Inc.'s board of directors unanimously voted to fire Chicago-based Arthur Andersen LLP and hire London-based Ernst & Young LLP as its new auditor. Andersen has been fighting to clear its name in the Houston-based Enron Corp. collapse but recently was indicted on a charge of obstruction of justice for shredding Enron documents.

  • Eaton Corp., Kalamazoo, Mich., has announced that Maverick Transportation, Little Rock, Ark., has installed Eaton VORAD EVT-300 collision warning systems in its entire fleet of more than 750 tractors.

  • San Francisco-based Norcal Waste Systems Inc. has opened a liquefied natural gas (LNG) station to convert its 38 long-haul vehicles with the low-pollution alternative fuel. The conversion allows for a 50 percent reduction in nitrous oxide emissions and an 80 percent reduction in particulate matter.

  • New York-based NEC Corp. and its 26 domestic manufacturing subsidiaries have achieved zero-emissions status for general and industrial waste through waste matter and recycling activities.

  • Madras, Ore.-based Keith Manufacturing Co. has received the 2001 Jefferson County Business of the Year Award from the Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.

  • Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill., has received the Illinois Governor's Pollution Prevention Continuous Improvement Award for its innovations in two plants in Mossville, Ill., and Mapleton, Ill.

  • The California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB), Sacramento, has given ten businesses its ninth annual Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) of the Year award for their waste reduction efforts. Award-winners include SMG - The Moscone Center, San Francisco; Anheuser-Busch Inc.'s Fairfield Brewery, Solano County; The City Market of Los Angeles; Fender Musical Instruments Corp., Corona; IBM Corp., San Jose; Korbel Champagne Cellars, Guerneville; Pacific Bell Directory, San Francisco; Philips Semiconductors, Sunnyvale and San Jose; Sacramento Zoological Society; and Yost Printers & Lithographers, Monrovia.

  • The Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District (CVSWMD), Montpelier, has received the Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence in Pollution Prevention for its DeTox Family Program, designed to reduce the quantity and toxicity of household hazardous products purchased.

  • Ridgefield, N.J.-based Total Recycling Services Inc. (TRS) has been named New Jersey's top recycling company of 2001 by the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Trenton.



Call for Presentations

  • The Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Pittsburgh-based Engineer's Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP), the Washington, D.C.-based International City/County Management Association (ICMA), and several governmental and non-governmental organizations have announced a call for presentations for the seventh annual Brownfields Conference to be held Nov. 13-15, 2002, in Charlotte, N.C. Certifications

  • Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Dana Corp.'s Ride & Control Systems Division's Humboldt, Tenn., facility has received ISO 4001 environmental certification.

  • Portland, Maine-based Regional Waste Systems Inc.'s (RWS) environmental management system has achieved ISO 14001 certification.



Contract

  • CETCO, Arlington Heights, Ill., has been awarded a contract with SI Geosolutions, Chattanooga, Tenn., to market SI's Geotex nonwoven geotextiles with CETCO's Bentomat and Claymax geosynthetic clay liners.



Fiscal

  • Terex Corp., Westport, Conn., has reported 2001 net income of $12.8 million, compared with 2000 net income of $95.1 million. The company also has reported net sales of $1,812.5 million for 2001, compared with net sales of $2,068.7 million for 2001.

  • Ag-Bag International Ltd., Warrenton, Ore., has reported 2001 net loss of $164,150, compared with 2000 net income of $521,814. The company also has reported net sales of $28.71 million, compared with net sales of $31.45 million for 2001.

  • Waste Management Inc., Houston, has reported net income for the fourth quarter of 2001 ended Dec. 31, 2001, of $158 million, compared with $39 million for the same quarter of 2001. Revenues were $2.79 billion, compared with revenues of $2.88 billion for the same quarter of 2001. For the 2001 year, net income was $503 million, compared with a net loss of $97 million for 2000. Revenues were $11.32 billion, compared with revenues of $12.49 billion for 2000.

  • Rotonics Manufacturing Inc. (RMI), Gardena, Calif., has reported earnings of $394,100 on net sales of $9.3 million for the Q3 ended March 31, 2002, compared with earnings of $260,800 on net sales of $9.9 million for the same quarter last year.



New Facilities

  • Leach Co., Oshkosh, Wis., has opened a 6,300-square-foot test center facility in Oshkosh.

  • Skyline Center Inc., partner with City Carton Recycling, Davenport, Iowa, has opened a state-certified redemption facility and recycling center in Clinton, Iowa.



Sales

  • Stericycle Inc., Lake Forest, Ill., has purchased the operating assets of San Francisco-based Integrated Environmental Services Inc. (IES), a medical waste management company and subsidiary of San Francisco-based Norcal Waste Systems Inc.

  • Braintree, Mass.-based Clean Harbors Inc. has entered an agreement regarding the potential sale of the chemical services division of Safety-Kleen Corp., Columbia, S.C., for $46.3 million. Other interested parties may submit a bid by May 30, 2002.

  • DynaMotive Energy Systems Corp., Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, has completed the sale of its DynaPower metal-cleaning subsidiary to former employees. The company will focus on the bioenergy field and the development of BioOil-related technology and systems.

  • Fontaine Trailer Co., Haleyville, Ala., has purchased the assets of Ravens Inc., Ravenswood, W.V. Ravens will retain its name and operate as a division of Fontaine Trailer.

  • Capital Technology Inc., Rowayton, Conn., has sold the Al Turi 5.0 megawatt landfill gas-to-energy project located in Goshen, N.Y.

  • The National Association of Demolition Contractors (NADC), Doylestown, Pa., has awarded college scholarships to five students who have demonstrated a commitment to serving the local community while maintaining high academic achievements. Award winners are: Nichole Mendinsky, Pine Grove, Pa.; Lyndsay Robinson, Marlton, N.J.; Scott Shorten, Stillwell, Kan.; James Langer, North Oaks, Minn.; and Joan Blazucki, Southern California.
