Welcome to WasteExpo
April 1, 2002
Rita Ugianskis-Fishman
It's been about a year since I last saw many of you in Chicago at the 2001 event. Since WasteExpo 2001, so much has happened to all of us that it almost seems like we are in a different place and time. All of us have been touched in some way by the events of September 11th, and by the effects of the economy. It's been a very tough year. I think it's also been good for us in some ways.
This past year has forced all of us to re-evaluate our businesses and our lives in general. I'd venture to say that we are all more clearly focused on what is important. Our priorities may be different; or perhaps we are just more aware of them. The way we conduct ourselves — in business and in our personal lives — is different. We are more tuned-in to the world around us. We are more tuned-in to what's happening in this industry. We are more tuned- in to the needs of our customers, friends and families. We are strong and resilient. We are also more aware.
It is in this frame of mind that we have organized WasteExpo 2002 for you. We have evaluated this event very closely and believe we have an understanding, based on your feedback, of what you need from this event — particularly this year — and what you like about this event. We have focused our efforts on these things.
WasteExpo continues to embrace all parts of this industry — private sector, public sector and generators of waste (end-users).
We are happy to continue a relationship with SWANA, the Solid Waste Association of North America.
We are happy to continue our relationship with the faculty from Yale University's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.
We are pleased with our new relationship with Waste News and its sponsorship of our generators programming effort — the Executive Environmental Program.
We continue to reach out to all involved in this industry — nationwide and those from outside the United States, and we wish to thank the U.S. Department of Commerce, and worldwide network of people who work on the International Buyer Program, for all their assistance.
We appreciate all the help we have received from our Supporting Organizations and Allied Publications.
We welcome the 65 new exhibiting companies who have chosen WasteExpo this year to showcase their products and services to all of you.
And, we greatly appreciate all the help we have received from the Environmental Industry Associations (EIA/NSWMA/WASTEC) and from Waste Age magazine. When it comes right down to it, WasteExpo is all about the exhibits and the education program. The exhibit floor would be not as large in size and scope, and the education program would not be as inclusive and comprehensive, without the daily help from these two groups of people.
And lastly, we are going to try something new this year. For one hour, we are going to forget about the past year and forget about wondering what lies ahead. For one hour, on Tuesday, after the exhibit floor closes, we are going to join together, enjoy each other's company and laugh. I hope all of you will join us Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. for the WasteExpo General Session, sponsored by the McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing Co. and featuring comedian Al Franken. If there was ever a time when we needed to be amongst friends and laugh, isn't it now?
I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas!
Sincerely,
At-A-Glance Schedule
