Republic Services has contracted with Clean Energy Fuels Corp. to process and sell gas recovered from a Republic landfill in Canton, Mich.

Under the terms of the agreement, Clean Energy will build a high-BTU landfill gas processing plant at the Sauk Trail Hills Landfill. A portion of the resulting natural gas will be used as fuel by part of Republic’s fleet and another portion will be injected into the natural gas pipeline. The plant is slated to begin operations in early 2012.

Republic has previously contacted with Clean Energy to build and operate 14 compressed natural gas fueling stations, and to provide its California fleet with 3 million gallons of liquefied natural gas per year.
