As the South Canyon Landfill continues to get filled up with materials that could easily be diverted to recycling or compost, officials are doing something about it. In an attempt to extend the life of the landfill, government officials and landfill workers are emphasizing the need to ban certain materials from landfills to promote other methods of disposing of them. Two of the largest of these are yard and food waste, both of which can be composted. Other items of focus are cardboard and metal because they are commonly sent to the landfill.
