Laudable Landfills

THE U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL Protection Agency's (EPA) Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) recently recognized program participants from around the country for their efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The awards were presented in January as part of LMOP's Annual Conference and Project Expo in Baltimore.

Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Biodiesel Industries and Denton, Texas, won the Project of the Year: Alternate Fuel Award for a 3-million-gallon biodiesel production facility at the city's landfill. The product is being used to power the city's truck fleet, marking the first time landfill gas has been used to produce biodiesel, according to EPA.

Moncks Corner, S.C.-based Santee Cooper took the Project of the Year: Electricity Award for establishing 10 megawatts of landfill gas-fueled green power in South Carolina. Meanwhile, Chester County, Pa., and Granger Energy used landfill gas to power four local companies, garnering them the award for Project of the Year: Direct Use.
