Rumpke to Pay Fine for Air Pollution Violations at Landfill
March 22, 2010
The Rumpke Sanitary Landfill in Colerain Township, Ohio, has agreed to pay a $98,000 fine to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for violations of air pollution regulations. The violations are the result of too-high temperatures in landfill gas extraction wells, the Ohio EPA says.
The site also has agreed to “follow an action plan developed in cooperation with local, state and federal agencies” to continue to address problems with the wells, which Ohio officials believe “are being caused by a subsurface fire within the landfill,” according to an Ohio EPA press release.
“I am very pleased with the cooperation between the company, regulators and safety services, which have been working together to address this situation in the best way possible,” said Ohio EPA Director Chris Korleski in a press release. “I expect this cooperation to continue as the action plan is fully implemented.”
