Chicago — Neighborhood activists from Chicago’s Southeast Side are continuing their campaign against Waste Management of Illinois’ plans for its CID Landfill. According to the Chicago Tribune, the activists presented Mayor Richard Daly’s office with petitions containing 15,000 signatures on Tuesday. The petitions urged "the city to stand behind a 20-year moratorium on new and expanded landfills that is up for renewal in February," the paper says.

The activists want the CID Landfill to close next, as it is currently scheduled to do. However, Waste Management "is lobbying for approval to dump another 6 million tons of trash and debris over five years before turning the site into a 200-acre park," according to the paper.
